SGPC Withdraws Charge of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Jathedar from Giani Harpreet Singh Amid Allegations
Amritsar (The Uttam Hindu): The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has temporarily withdrawn the charge of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Jathedar from Giani Harpreet Singh following allegations made by his brother-in-law, Gurpreet Singh. In the interim, the responsibility has been handed over to Damdama Sahib Head Granthi Jagtar Singh. Additionally, a 3-member committee comprising Raghujit Singh Virk, Daljit Bhinder and Sher Singh Mand has been formed to investigate the matter. During the investigation, Giani Harpreet Singh will not be allowed to attend the meetings of the Panj Singh Sahibs.
A meeting of the SGPC internal committee was held at Gurdwara Sri Degsar Katana Sahib in Doraha chaired by SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami. The committee discussed the allegations against Giani Harpreet Singh which stem from a family dispute dating back 18 years in Muktsar Sahib. Although the SGPC President did not provide any details to the media he confirmed that a press release would be issued soon, outlining the findings of the meeting and the next steps.
In response to the allegations, Giani Harpreet Singh had previously stated that he was being targeted due to personal vendettas specifically pointing to an old family dispute. He expressed surprise that this issue was being raised again after 18 years and stressed that his only "crime" was attending a meeting of the five Singh Sahibs on December 2. Giani Harpreet Singh vehemently denied any wrongdoing asserting that he did not partake in any sin and remained firm in his position despite the ongoing controversy and media scrutiny.
