Secrets, Love, and Loss: Parents’ Suicide Over Son’s Marriage Stuns Community

Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh (The Uttam Hindu): A middle-aged couple from Nandyal district, identified as 45-year-old Subba Rayudu and his 38-year-old wife Saraswati, allegedly died by suicide following prolonged disputes with their son over his relationship with a transgender partner.
According to Nandyal Sub-Divisional Police Officer P. Srinivas Reddy, the couple's tragic deaths came after months of escalating tensions with their 24-year-old son, Sunil Kumar. Kumar, who had been associating with the local transgender community for three years, was in a committed relationship with a transgender individual. He refused to marry a woman, which led to frequent arguments with his parents.
Adding to the strain, Kumar had reportedly spent Rs 1.5 lakh borrowed from members of the transgender community. When he failed to repay, the community members demanded restitution from his parents and allegedly humiliated them publicly. These financial and social pressures compounded the couple's emotional turmoil. Police also revealed that Kumar had previously attempted suicide over the same issue, further distressing his parents. Kumar, the couple’s only child, had recently taken a job as an autorickshaw driver after completing his B.Tech degree. Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the incident to uncover further details surrounding the circumstances that led to the couple's untimely deaths.
