Just before the verdict, Sajjan Kumar had appealed for leniency in the sentence and said that there is no basis to give me the death penalty in this case. Sajjan Kumar said, "I am 80 years old, I am battling many diseases with increasing age, I am in jail since 2018. Since then I have not received any furlough/parole."

Sajjan Kumar sentenced to life imprisonment… He said, "He has not been involved in any criminal case after the 1984 riots. The court should fix the minimum punishment for him in this case keeping in mind the humanitarian aspect. This case is related to the murder of two Sikh citizens Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh in Saraswati Vihar area of ​​Delhi on 1 November 1984. During this time there was a massacre of Sikhs and their houses were set on fire. Initially, an FIR was registered in Punjabi Bagh police station regarding this case. Later, the Special Investigation Team formed on the recommendation of Justice GP Mathur Committee investigated this case and filed a charge sheet.
