Nagpur (The Uttam Hindu): Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has made its presence felt in India with cases steadily increasing across the country. Two suspected cases of HMPV have now been identified in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Previously, cases were reported in Karnataka (2), Gujarat (1), West Bengal (1) and Tamil Nadu (2).

In Nagpur, a 13-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy have shown symptoms of the virus. After experiencing persistent cold and cough their families sought testing at a private lab which confirmed HMPV. Although the positive results caused concern the children's conditions are stable and they are recovering at home without the need for hospitalization.

Mumbai Municipal Corporation on High Alert

In response to the increasing cases, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has heightened its vigilance. JJ Hospital and St. George Hospital have been designated as the primary facilities for treating suspected HMPV patients. Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution and follow preventive measures.

Protecting Children from HMPV

Since children are particularly vulnerable to HMPV it is crucial to take preventive steps:

Encourage regular handwashing.

Protect children from exposure to infections.

Avoid travel to areas with reported cases.

Ensure a healthy diet to boost immunity.

Recognizing HMPV Symptoms

Be alert for symptoms such as:

High fever (above 103°F/40°C).

Difficulty breathing.

Blue discoloration of skin, lips or nails (cyanosis).

If these symptoms are present, consult a doctor and consider HMPV testing. Diagnosis typically involves collecting a nasal or throat swab to confirm the virus.

The situation remains under close observation as authorities work to manage and contain the spread of HMPV in India.
