New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Panama has released dozens of migrants detained in a remote camp after being deported from the US, including people from Afghanistan, Russia, Iran, Pakistan, China, and Nepal. These migrants have 30 days to leave Panama, leaving many in legal limbo.

Among the released is 29-year-old Afghan refugee, Hayatullah Omagh, who fled the Taliban in 2022. Omagh, deported after being denied asylum in the US, fears returning to Afghanistan due to the threat of death from the Taliban. “We are refugees, we don’t have money or relatives here,” he said.

While Panamanian authorities have offered a 60-day stay extension, many deported migrants still face an unclear future. Human rights groups are scrambling to offer shelter and support, but others remain in the camp, which has been criticized for poor conditions. The camp was part of a deal between the US and Panama to facilitate deportations, raising human rights concerns.

Omagh and other detainees expressed fears of returning home due to violence and persecution. Despite international refugee laws guaranteeing asylum for those fleeing danger, Panama has denied their asylum requests. Conditions in the camp included scarce food, sweltering heat, and aggressive treatment by authorities.

Omagh and others are uncertain of their next steps. Panama has suggested arranging travel to third countries for those unwilling to return home, but the options are limited. Many deportees, like a Chinese migrant, are determined to reach the US despite the difficulties.

The future of these migrants remains unclear, with many trapped in a dire situation.
