Punjab Government Takes Strong Action: Police Officers to Be Held Responsible for Major Incidents

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Reiterating the State Government's firm commitment to control crime in the State, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann today said that in any area where any major incident takes place, the responsibility of the concerned police officers of that area will be fixed.
During a meeting with Police Commissioners and SSPs here today, the Chief Minister said that there should be effective policing to control crime in the State. He said that Punjab Police is one of the best forces in the country and the glorious tradition of Punjab Police must be maintained at all costs to protect the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the country. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that people should get justice and the roots of communal harmony, peace and brotherhood should remain strong in the State.
The Chief Minister said that the State Government would implement major police reforms so that the people could benefit from it. He said that the aim was to ensure that the hard-earned peace in the State was maintained at all costs. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the Punjab Government had already laid emphasis on the modernization of police in the State and Punjab Police was today being equipped with world-class vehicles.
The Chief Minister further said that those involved in illegal activities must be dealt with strictly and those involved in this crime must not be spared. He said that the police officers must lay more emphasis on collecting intelligence and providing justice to the common man. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the fight against drugs must be turned into a mass movement and Panchayats must be motivated for this purpose. The Chief Minister said that the supply chain of drugs in the state must be broken more strictly. He said that a no-leniency policy must be adopted against the menace of drugs and no person involved in this heinous crime must be spared. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that he would monitor the action against drugs on a daily basis. He also said that suitable strategies must be devised to make the youth aware of the dangers of drugs at the school and college level.
The Chief Minister said that the properties of drug traffickers must be confiscated and no leniency should be shown in this regard. He said that the time had come when we must fight a decisive battle against drugs so that our future generations can be saved from it. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the properties of drug traffickers must be confiscated immediately and the big fish involved in this big crime must be put behind bars. The Chief Minister said that the Punjab Government was determined to wipe out organised crime in the state and strict action must be taken against gangsters. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that no one should be allowed to take the law into their own hands and exemplary action must be taken against such people. He said that gangsters must be brought under control and strict action must be taken against them.
The Chief Minister said that stern action must be taken against gangsters to curb these anti-social elements. Bhagwant Singh Mann categorically stated that organised crime lords in the state would not be allowed to raise their heads and they must be taught a lesson. He also asked the officers to prepare a complete blueprint to curb petty crimes in the state. The Chief Minister said that the Punjab government was committed to eradicate corruption in the state and even corruption in the police machinery needed to be curbed with an iron hand. He said that all the black sheep in the police force must be identified and strict action taken against them. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that such police personnel who came under suspicion should be investigated who were bringing a bad name to the entire police force.
The Chief Minister also advocated for better coordination with the common people to curb the crime rate across the state. He said that this would help in eliminating crime in the state which would give a big boost to the peace, progress and prosperity of the state. Bhagwant Singh Mann recalled the stellar role of Punjab Police in combating the dark days of terrorism with the active cooperation of the common people. Discussing another issue, the Chief Minister asked the officers to conduct surprise checks in their respective jurisdictions. He said that the aim of this should not be to find faults but to streamline matters related to law and order. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that this would further enhance the efficiency of Punjab Police and ensure the safety of the people.
