Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): The by-elections in Punjab, held on November 20, 2024, for four assembly seats—Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal, and Barnala—are currently in the counting stage as of November 23, 2024. The overall voter turnout for these elections was around 63.91%. Gidderbaha recorded the highest turnout at 81.90%, followed by Dera Baba Nanak at 64.01%, Barnala at 56.34%, and Chabbewal at 53.43%.

As of now, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading in three constituencies. In Chabbewal, AAP's Ishank Kumar Chabbewal is ahead by 3,308 votes over Congress's Ranjit Kumar. In Gidderbaha, AAP's Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon is leading by 1,044 votes against Congress's Amrita Warring. In Dera Baba Nanak, AAP's Gurdeep Singh Randhawa is ahead by 265 votes against Congress's Jatinder Kaur. In Barnala, Congress's Kuldeep Singh Dhillon holds a lead of 360 votes over AAP's Harinder Singh Dhaliwal.

These by-elections were triggered after the previous legislators were elected to the Lok Sabha earlier this year. The counting process began at 8 AM IST on November 23, with heightened security measures at counting centers across the state to ensure a smooth procedure. The results of these elections are expected to have a significant impact on the political landscape of Punjab as they unfold.
