Patiala (The Uttam Hindu) : In a significant move to boost the spirit of sports in Punjab, Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO announced that the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) will soon initiate new recruitments under the sports quota. This initiative aims to encourage sportspersons and foster a sporting culture within the organization.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 46th AIESCB Tug of War Tournament at the PSPCL Sports Complex on Tuesday, the Minister also revealed plans to introduce a promotion policy for sportspersons within PSPCL. “This step will not only recognize the efforts of our athletes but also inspire a wave of enthusiasm for sports across the state,” he said.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister emphasized the importance of sports in shaping well-rounded individuals and urged youth to steer clear of drugs and instead channel their energy into physical activities. “Engaging in sports leads to holistic development, builds character, and keeps the youth on a constructive path,” he added.

Praising the tournament, he noted the high level of enthusiasm and participation, which reflected the organization’s strong team spirit and competitive edge. “The Tug of War tournament has been a wonderful showcase of strength, discipline, and sportsmanship. Such events nurture camaraderie and create a vibrant, healthy work environment,” he remarked.

Highlighting the revival of the PSPCL Sports Cell, the Minister said, “Reinvigorating the Sports Cell was about more than just promoting athletics—it was about sparking pride and purpose among our employees. Our athletes have brought home national and international accolades, proving that with support and encouragement, excellence is inevitable.”

The event commenced with a ceremonial welcome of the Chief Guest and a welcome address by Ajoy Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary Power and CMD, PSPCL. He underscored the tournament’s role in promoting unity and discipline. “The 46th AIESCB Tug of War Tournament exemplified the spirit of teamwork and competition. It brought employees together in a celebration of strength and solidarity,” he said.

Sinha also credited the success of PSPCL’s Sports Cell to the Power Minister’s vision, noting that the cell has reached new heights since its revival a year and a half ago. He lauded Raj Kumar, Junior Sports Officer and Arjuna Awardee, who recently earned silver medals at the Para Asian Games (China, 2023) and the Para Badminton World Championship (Thailand, 2024).

Director Admin Jasbir Singh Sur Singh expressed heartfelt gratitude to all contributors and organizers. The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, celebrating the achievements of participating teams, followed by the formal closing of the tournament.
