Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) are protesting across Punjab on Friday against the film actress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, Kangana Ranaut's film "Emergency".

Members of SGPC and other Sikh organizations have gathered outside cinema halls across the state. However, the film has been released in Chandigarh where no protest is being done. In view of the protest by Sikh organizations, a large number of police personnel have been deployed outside PVR Suraj Chanda Tara cinema in Amritsar. Protests are also being done in Patiala, Ludhiana and Mohali etc. Bookings were being done in cinema halls till Thursday, which have been cancelled today. It is worth mentioning that the film “Emergency” is being released across the country today, which SGPC has strongly opposed and has demanded the Punjab government to ban the film in Punjab.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Harjinder Singh Dhami on Thursday wrote a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann demanding a ban on the film. He said that the film "Emergency" produced by BJP MP Kangana Ranaut is going to be released in cinemas in various cities of Punjab on 17 January 2025 and tickets have also started being booked for it. He said that the SGPC has already written a letter to the Chief Secretary of the Punjab Government through the resolution of the interim committee on 28 September 2024 demanding a ban on Kangana Ranaut's film Emergency in Punjab. He clearly said that the film "Emergency" will not be allowed to run in Punjab, as it has been made in a political way with the aim of defaming the Sikhs.

Dhami said that through a resolution, the state government was demanded to ban the release of this film in Punjab but it is unfortunate that the Punjab government has not taken any action so far. If this film is released on January 17, 2025, then naturally it will cause resentment and anger in the Sikh community. He said that the film has furthered the anti-Sikh agenda with the spirit of spewing venom against the nation by suppressing the deadly attacks on the holy pilgrimage of Sikhs, Sachkhand Sri Golden Temple, Sri Akal Takht Sahib and many other places in 1984 as well as the Sikh massacre and genocide. Along with this, the national martyr of the Sikhs, Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale has also been portrayed in the film.
