PM Modi calls passage of Wakf Amendment Bill a 'Watershed moment'

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): After the Lok Sabha, the Waqf Amendment Bill was also passed by the Rajya Sabha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called it a historic moment. He said that the passing of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Muslim Waqf (Abolition) Bill is a historic moment in the direction of socio-economic justice, transparency and inclusive development of the country. He said the move will be especially beneficial for people who have been marginalised for a long time and denied voice and opportunity.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to all the MPs who participated in the parliamentary and committee discussions on these bills, presented their views and contributed to strengthening these laws. He also specially thanked the countless people who sent their valuable suggestions to the Parliamentary Committee. The Prime Minister said that once again, the importance of extensive debate and dialogue has been proven. The Prime Minister said that for decades, the Waqf system has been synonymous with lack of transparency and accountability, which has particularly harmed the interests of Muslim women, poor Muslims and pass-through Muslims. These bills passed by Parliament will increase transparency and protect the rights of the people.
Prime Minister Modi said that we will now enter an era where the structure will be more modern and sensitive to social justice. He also said that we are committed to prioritizing the dignity of every citizen. In this way, we build a stronger, more inclusive and more compassionate India. It is noteworthy that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill has been passed in the Rajya Sabha. With this, the bill has got the approval of the Parliament. After being presented in the upper house on Thursday, the bill was passed on Thursday-Friday midnight after a discussion that lasted for about 12 hours. It got 128 votes in its favour and 95 against it. The Lok Sabha had already approved it. The purpose of this bill is to change the structure of the Waqf Board and reduce legal disputes by amending the Waqf Act.
