Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): The Punjab government continues to roll out new initiatives for the public, with the latest announcement focusing on the expansion of public transport infrastructure. The Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) will establish its first sub-depot in Daula village, Gidderbaha, as part of a major infrastructure enhancement. This project, which is slated for completion by January 31, carries a budget of Rs 3.36 crore and will address both the infrastructure needs of the region and the long-standing demands of local residents.

Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar shared the details of the project, noting that it is part of a broader initiative to modernize Punjab’s public transport system. In addition to the new sub-depot, the Patiala bus stand has been redeveloped, and bus services have been extended to towns such as Cheeka, Samana, Nabha, Rajpura, Ghanour, Pehavo, and several others within a 30-km radius.

In a further boost to public transport, 85 new buses will be added to the fleet, and Letters of Intent have already been issued to 81 individuals for the same. This will also create new self-employment opportunities, in line with the state government's commitment to generating jobs and strengthening local businesses. Additionally, PRTC is moving forward with a solar plant project worth Rs 2.87 crore, which will equip all headquarters depots and bus stands with solar power systems. This initiative is expected to save the corporation around Rs 97 lakh annually in electricity costs, with the investment expected to pay off in less than three years.
