Morocco (The Uttam Hindu): A boat carrying 80 migrants attempting to reach Spain capsized near Morocco, resulting in the deaths of over 40 Pakistanis, officials confirmed on Thursday. The migrant rights group Walking Borders reported that more than 50 individuals are feared drowned in the incident.

The tragedy followed Moroccan authorities rescuing 36 people from a boat that departed Mauritania on January 2, carrying 86 migrants including 66 Pakistanis. Helena Maleno, CEO of Walking Borders, stated on social media platform X that 44 of the deceased were Pakistani nationals.

Pakistan’s Response

The Pakistan Foreign Office released a statement confirming the incident noting that their embassy in Morocco is actively coordinating with local authorities to assist in the rescue and relief efforts. A team from the embassy has been dispatched to Dakhla to provide support to Pakistani survivors and ensure necessary aid.

The statement read: "Our Embassy in Rabat (Morocco) has informed us that a boat carrying 80 passengers including Pakistani nationals from Mauritania capsized near Dakhla port. Several Pakistani nationals and other survivors have been accommodated in a camp near Dakhla. We are ensuring immediate relief and support."

Grief Expressed by PM Shahbaz Sharif

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed his sorrow over the tragedy in a message shared on Twitter: "Extremely disturbing news about the capsizing of a boat off the coast of Morocco. More than 80 passengers including many Pakistanis, were on board. This is a shock to me and the entire nation."

He added, "I have directed the Ministry of External Affairs to engage with local authorities in Morocco to trace the missing, rescue survivors and repatriate the remains of those who lost their lives. Strict action will also be taken against human traffickers and agents in Pakistan responsible for luring citizens into such perilous situations."
