Major Mishap Averted: Nandan Kanan Express Splits, Coaches Move 200m Ahead

Chandauli (The Uttam Hindu): A major accident was averted at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction (DDU Junction) located in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh. On Monday night around 9:30 pm, the coupling of the sleeper coach S4 bogie of 12876 Nandan Kanan Express train going from Anand Vihar to Puri in Odisha broke, due to which the coaches of the train got separated. Six coaches including the engine moved 200 meters ahead and the rest remained behind. After this, there was chaos among the passengers. They were nervous and could not understand what was happening. The passengers inside the train were in a state of confusion, but fortunately no major accident occurred and no passenger was injured. At the time of the incident, the train was already running more than three hours late.
After the incident, the railway employees took immediate action and separated the S4 bogie whose coupling was broken from the train and the passengers in it were shifted to another bogie. After a delay of about one and a half to two hours, the train was sent off again around 1 am by joining both the parts. The passengers expressed anger over this incident and held the railway responsible for it. A passenger said that if the speed of the train had been higher, a major accident could have happened. He appealed to the Indian Railways to take such incidents seriously so that no such accident occurs in future.
DDU Junction station manager, S.K. Singh said that the train was flagged off from platform number 2, but the incident occurred only after it had covered a distance of six kilometres. He said that the train was repaired by bringing both the parts together and then the entire train was sent off safely again. A passenger said, "I was travelling from Anand Vihar to Medinipur in train number 12816. Our seat was in S5, when suddenly the coupling between S4 and S5 broke. A major accident was averted due to the slow speed. If the train had moved faster, the situation would have been different. I appeal to the railways to take this seriously and improve it."
Another passenger said, "The train left from platform 2 and got separated after 6 km. Both the parts were brought to platform 1 and after repairing the train left." Female passenger Lochini also told about the incident that the situation inside the train became very scary when the coupling of sleeper S4 bogie broke. She said that at that time she was very nervous and she was afraid that if the speed of the train had increased, a big accident could have happened.
