New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Supreme Court, while hearing the high-profile drug smuggling case against Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, has rejected the Punjab government's plea seeking cancellation of his bail. At the same time, the apex court issued a clear directive — both the police and Majithia must refrain from making public statements related to the ongoing investigation.

The court emphasized that Majithia is obligated to cooperate with the investigation process. If summoned by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), he must appear without fail. Any deviation or non-cooperation could lead to a reconsideration of his bail status.

"Element of Surprise is Lost": Punjab Govt's Concern

During the hearing, the Punjab government's counsel raised concerns over Majithia's prior knowledge of investigation steps. “Every time we approach the court for a search warrant, he somehow finds out and immediately posts on social media that a search is underway,” the lawyer argued.

The Supreme Court questioned whether this foreknowledge affected the efficacy of the searches. The state's counsel responded, “Yes, it does. We are now forced to conduct operations behind closed doors, and the crucial element of surprise is completely lost.”

Despite these concerns, the Court chose not to revoke Majithia's bail at this stage, urging both parties to maintain the integrity of the investigation process and avoid actions that may compromise it.
