Indian Government Issues Advisory on HMPV Virus, Seeks Timely Updates from WHO
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) continues to rise in China with reports suggesting it could be more dangerous than COVID-19. In response, several Chinese states have declared emergencies due to the virus's increasing spread. The Indian government has also issued an advisory, urging vigilance and preparedness against HMPV.
India has instructed health authorities to closely monitor cases of respiratory symptoms and influenza. The government has also requested regular updates from the World Health Organization (WHO) and assured that it is fully prepared to address respiratory diseases. While there has been no unusual surge in HMPV cases in India the number of testing labs for the virus will be increased, and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will track HMPV trends year-round.
Health experts including Dr. Anil Goyal from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), have emphasized that HMPV shares similarities with COVID-19, pneumonia and the flu with symptoms like sore throat, runny nose, cough and fever. Preventative measures such as wearing masks, maintaining social distance, handwashing and avoiding contact with infected individuals remain critical. The Indian government continues to monitor the worsening situation in China and remains in touch with international health agencies to stay updated.
