New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has made its way to Puducherry, with a 5-year-old girl testing positive for the virus. The girl, who showed symptoms of fever, was admitted to JIPMER Hospital, where doctors confirmed her HMPV infection. The hospital administration has stated that the child is currently in stable condition.

This development follows previous advice from the health department not to panic regarding the HMPV virus, despite a slow increase in cases across India. While the infection rate remains low, several cases have been reported in various states, including Nagpur, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Salem.

Experts have assured the public that there is no need for alarm, although the government has heightened precautions. Health authorities have urged all states to remain vigilant, and several states have issued alerts to monitor the spread of the virus. As of January 10, seven cases of HMPV have been confirmed in India, including two cases in Karnataka, one in Gujarat, and two in Tamil Nadu. All cases involve children aged between 3 months and 13 years. The first reports of the virus were seen in Karnataka, followed by cases in Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Salem.

Known as a seasonal virus, HMPV has prompted global concern, particularly following a rise in cases in China. The Indian Ministry of Health has issued guidelines to prevent further spread of the virus, which can cause symptoms ranging from mild to severe respiratory issues.
