Magdeburg (The Uttam Hindu): A car plowed into a crowded Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg, speeding through the scene and injuring around 70 people. Two individuals were killed instantly, while at least 68 others sustained injuries. Authorities suspect the incident may have been a deliberate attack, although the motive remains unclear. The driver of the car has been arrested. The market, filled with shoppers doing Christmas shopping at the time, was struck during this horrific event.

Saxony-Anhalt's interior minister Tamara Zischang told the media that the suspect is a 50-year-old Saudi doctor who first came to Germany in 2006. As things stand, he is a lone offender, so as far as we know, there is no further threat to the city. Fifteen of the injured were very seriously hurt, AP reports.

Governor Rainer Haseloff said that the two deaths confirmed include an adult and a child. However, the condition of some people is critical, so further deaths cannot be ruled out. According to a DPA report, Magdeburg University Hospital also said that 10 to 20 patients are being treated in the hospital. At the same time, Saudi Arabia has also issued a statement regarding the incident. Saudi Arabia has said that it stands with Germany regarding the incident. It also said that any kind of violence will not be tolerated. The incident took place at around 7 pm when the market was full of holiday shoppers.
