High Court Deems Farmer Leader's Detention Illegal: Orders Status Report

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Punjab government to reunite farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal with his family, stating that his detention is illegal. Dallewal, who has been on an indefinite fast since November 26, 2024, has been admitted to Patiala Hospital with his consent. The court has postponed the next hearing of this case till the day after tomorrow and has also directed the government to file a fresh status report.
In a related development, Punjab Police IG (Headquarters) Sukhchain Singh Gill said that around 1400 farmers were detained but the police have released 800 farmers so far. Women above 60 years of age or those with medical problems will also be released. About 450 farmers are expected to be released today. Additionally, the police have registered 3 FIRs regarding the theft of farmers' goods on the borders.
