Heatwave on its last breath North India to cool down with heavy rain

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): As much of the country reels under a relentless heatwave with daytime temperatures crossing 40 degrees in many states, the Meteorological Department has offered a glimmer of relief. A new western disturbance became active on April 16, along with cyclonic conditions in the Bay of Bengal. These developments are expected to trigger rainfall across several parts of the country in the coming days.
Heavy showers are likely in states like Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, while a heatwave alert remains in place for Rajasthan today. However, this heatwave is expected to ease from April 19. The western disturbance will continue to impact the Western Himalayan region till April 20, bringing rains to the plains of North India between April 18 and April 20.
In Central India, Chhattisgarh is expected to witness rain and thunderstorms on April 17 and 18. Meanwhile, the Northeast will see intense rainfall from April 17 to April 23, especially in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Himachal Pradesh is likely to get rain on April 20, and Uttarakhand may experience showers on April 20 and 21.
Despite these shifts, temperatures in North-West and Central India are expected to remain unchanged for the next few days, with heat persisting in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana.
In the South, Karnataka is expected to see the onset of pre-monsoon activity, with Bengaluru forecasted to receive rain almost daily starting Sunday. Relief from the scorching heat may soon follow for parts of southern India as well.
