Gaza (The Uttam Hindu): On January 30, 2025 Hamas initiated the release of the first of eight hostages who had been held captive for over 482 days as part of a ceasefire agreement with Israel. This marks the third round of hostage releases since the ceasefire began on January 19. Among those freed were three Israelis—Gadi Moses (80), Arbel Yehud (29) and Agam Berger (20)—along with five Thai nationals, whose identities have not yet been revealed.

The handover took place in Jabaliya, Gaza where Hamas militants arranged for the transfer of the hostages to the International Committee of the Red Cross which will oversee their handoff to Israeli forces. In return, Israel is expected to release 110 Palestinian prisoners, including some serving life sentences for attacks against Israelis. This release follows the violent escalation that began with Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 resulting in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths and the abduction of around 251 individuals.

Since the ceasefire began, a total of 15 hostages have been freed. Meanwhile, the conflict continues to devastate Gaza with reports indicating over 47,300 Palestinian casualties as a result of Israeli military actions. As families and supporters eagerly await updates on those still in captivity, the atmosphere remains one of tense anticipation. Negotiations for further exchanges and humanitarian relief efforts are ongoing in the region.
