Earth Trembles Again! Mysterious Early Morning Quake Registers 5.1 Magnitude in This City

Kolkata (The Uttam Hindu): The earth trembled once more as an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck early Tuesday morning. According to the National Center for Seismology, the epicenter of the quake was located in the Bay of Bengal at a depth of 91 kilometers. The tremors were also felt in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. So far, no reports of casualties or property damage have been received.
This follows a recent earthquake in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district on Sunday, where a magnitude 3.7 tremor was recorded at 8:42 AM. The earthquake's epicenter was near Kiargi in the Sundernagar area at a depth of 7 kilometers. Although strong tremors were felt in various parts of the district, no damage has been reported. Mandi falls under seismic zone 5, making it one of the highest-risk areas for earthquakes.
Recent Earthquakes Raise Seismic Concerns
Earlier this month, a powerful earthquake shook Delhi on February 17. The tremors, which originated in the Lake Park area of Dhaula Kuan, were accompanied by loud noises, alarming residents. The quake measured 4.6 in magnitude and had a shallow depth of 5 km. In 2007, a similar earthquake had hit the same area, though its impact was less severe due to a greater depth of 10 km.
Delhi falls under seismic zone 4, the second-highest risk category in the country. The region frequently experiences tremors due to its proximity to seismically active zones. Even distant earthquakes can cause tremors in Delhi-NCR, raising concerns about preparedness and safety measures in the densely populated urban area.
As seismic activity continues across different regions, authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols in case of future tremors.
