Guwahati (The Uttam Hindu): A strong earthquake of magnitude 5.0 struck Assam’s Morigaon district early Thursday morning, shaking several parts of the state, including Guwahati. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the tremors were recorded at 2:25 AM at a depth of 16 kilometers.

Assam, known for being one of the most earthquake-prone regions in India, lies in seismic zone V, making it highly susceptible to strong tremors. The region has witnessed some of the most powerful earthquakes in history, including the devastating 1950 Assam-Tibet earthquake (magnitude 8.6) and the 1897 Shillong earthquake (magnitude 8.1).

Tremors Felt in Kolkata After Bay of Bengal Quake

The earthquake in Assam comes just days after a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal on February 25. The tremors from this quake were felt in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal at around 6:10 AM. The Indian Meteorological Department reported that the epicenter was near Puri, Odisha, at a depth of 91 kilometers.

While the tremors caused momentary panic among residents in Kolkata, no reports of damage or casualties have emerged so far. Authorities continue to monitor the seismic activity, urging residents in high-risk areas to stay alert.
