Delhi's Fireworks Ban Extended for One More Year, Supreme Court Cites Hazardous Air Quality

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The ban on the manufacture, sale, and storage of fireworks in Delhi has been extended for one year. The decision was made by a bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justice Abhay S. Oka and Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan. They stated that the air pollution level has remained hazardous for a long time.
Not everyone can afford an air purifier
The bench of the Supreme Court mentioned that a large section of the country’s population works on the streets and is affected by pollution. Not everyone can afford to install air purifiers in their homes or offices. The Court further stated that until it is satisfied that "green crackers" cause very little pollution, there will be no reconsideration of the previous orders.
Ban was imposed on December 12
The Supreme Court had imposed a one-year ban on fireworks in Delhi NCR on December 12, 2024. The decision was made in response to demands to curb pollution in Delhi and its surrounding areas. The Court also mentioned that strict orders had to be issued because the governments were not addressing the issue.
