Delhi Elections 2025: 19% of Candidates Have Criminal Records, 81 Face Serious Charges

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The eyes of the whole country are on the Delhi Assembly. Voting will be held in a single phase on 5 February for 70 seats. Five parties that were part of the All India Alliance in the Lok Sabha elections are face to face. Aam Aadmi Party and Congress are in the fray on all 70 seats. Meanwhile, the report of Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has come out before the elections.
Let us tell you that Communist Party of India (CPI) has fielded its candidates on 6 seats, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) and Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist (CPI-ML) have fielded their candidates on 2 seats each. BJP has fielded its candidates on 68 seats. Two seats have been given to the alliance parties. In this, Janata Dal-United (JDU) has fielded its candidate from Burari and Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas (LJP-R) has fielded its candidate from Deoli seat.
NCP is contesting on 30 seats.
BJP's ally in Maharashtra, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is contesting on 30 seats. Shiv Sena chief and Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde has supported BJP on all seats. Apart from this, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is contesting on 70 seats and Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is contesting on 12 seats. The election results will come on February 8.
19% candidates are tainted, 81 have murder-rape cases against them.
Meanwhile, Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has prepared a report after examining the affidavits of all these candidates. According to the report, about 19% candidates are tainted, 81 have serious cases like murder, kidnapping, rape registered against them. 13 candidates are accused of crimes against women. According to the Election Commission, a total of 699 candidates from various parties including independents are in the election fray.

According to the ADR report, 5 candidates have property worth more than 100 crores. Of these, 3 belong to BJP while one each belongs to Congress and AAP. The average assets of BJP candidates is around Rs 22.90 crores. Whereas, 3 candidates have declared their assets as zero. Around 28% i.e. 196 candidates have declared their age between 25 to 40 years. 106 (15%) are between 61 to 80 years of age while the age of three is above 80 years. Out of all 699 candidates, 96 are women, which is around 14%.

– Manjinder Singh Sirsa (BJP) – Property worth Rs 248 crore

46% candidates are 5th to 12th pass
Talking about the educational qualification of the candidates, 46% have declared themselves to be between 5th to 12th. 18 candidates have declared themselves as diploma holders, 6 as literate and 29 as illiterate.
