Belagavi (The Uttam Hindu): An elderly couple in Belagavi district, Karnataka, has died by suicide after falling prey to a ruthless cyber scam. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the devastating consequences of cyber fraud on vulnerable individuals.
The Scam: A Web of Deceit
The couple, Diogjeron Santan Nazareth (82) and his wife Flaviana (79), were targeted by scammers claiming to be telecom department officials. The fraudsters convinced Diogjeron that a SIM card had been purchased in his name for illicit activities and that he needed to provide financial details to avoid legal consequences. Despite transferring over ₹50 lakh to the scammers, the couple continued to receive demands for more money. The relentless harassment and financial strain took a toll on the couple, who felt they had no escape.
A Final, Desperate Act
In a heartbreaking note, Diogjeron explained the couple's decision to end their lives. The note revealed the emotional toll of the scam, with Diogjeron stating that they did not want to live at the mercy of others. The police have registered a case of abetment to suicide and cyber fraud against the accused individuals, Sumit Birra and Anil Yadav. Authorities are working to track down the scammers and recover the stolen funds.
