Change in the appointment of judges, SC Collegium broke tradition, took this big step
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Supreme Court Collegium took a landmark step on Sunday by directly engaging with High Court judges. The Collegium emphasized the importance of assessing a candidate's capability and personality through personal interaction rather than relying solely on file-based information. This move marks a significant shift towards enhancing transparency and credibility in the judicial appointment process, moving away from traditional methods.
This initiative comes amid concerns within the judiciary over controversial remarks made by Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court. His comments on religion and justice at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) event were widely viewed as contrary to constitutional values.
The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice (CJI) Sanjeev Khanna, along with members Justice Bhushan R. Gavai and Justice Suryakant, met with judicial officers and lawyers nominated for the Rajasthan, Allahabad, and Bombay High Courts. The Collegium reiterated the need for personal interactions to better evaluate the abilities and personalities of the candidates, moving beyond the limitations of file-based assessments.
