New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): US President Donald Trump highlighted the tensions in trade relations with Canada in a statement, saying that making deals with Canada is challenging. In one of his statements, Trump called Canada 'one of the worst countries'. Trump said that "we consider Canada the 51st state," this comment was made in reference to the annual subsidy of about $ 200 billion given to Canada.

Trump said that historically, trade tensions have increased due to trade differences between the two countries. He said that the US trade deficit figures have been exaggerated, while the US Trade Representative Office had estimated the trade deficit for 2024 to be $63.3 billion.

He also added that "I deal with every country directly or indirectly," and used strong words on several occasions when it came to Canada. According to him, some of Canada's products are not currently needed by the US.

Meanwhile, former Bank of England governor and economist Mark Carney said Trump's comments would continue to raise questions about Canada's sovereignty unless a broader partnership is discussed between the two countries.

The statement confirms the ongoing controversy and differences in the U.S.-Canadian trade relationship, raising the possibility for trade conversations and policy changes between the two countries.
