New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): If you're planning to travel by air, it’s crucial to acquaint yourself with the latest hand baggage policy set by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) before heading to the airport. Failing to do so may result in unnecessary inconveniences upon arrival. Due to a surge in passenger numbers at pre-embarkation security checkpoints, BCAS, along with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which oversees airport security, has tightened regulations around hand baggage. This stricter enforcement has prompted airlines to align their policies accordingly.

**One Hand Bag, Max 7 kg**

Under the revised BCAS policy, passengers are allowed to bring only one piece of hand baggage aboard the aircraft. This rule applies to both domestic and international flights, requiring any additional bags to be checked in.

For example, Air India permits economy and premium economy passengers to carry one hand bag weighing up to 7 kg. First- and business-class travelers, however, are allowed up to 10 kg. Additionally, the bag’s dimensions must not exceed 55 cm (21.6 inches) in height, 40 cm (15.7 inches) in length, and 20 cm (7.8 inches) in width.

**Exemptions for Tickets Booked Before May 2, 2024**

Airlines have set a maximum dimension limit of 115 cm for hand baggage. If a passenger's baggage exceeds the size or weight restrictions, additional charges may apply. However, passengers who booked their tickets before May 2, 2024, qualify for exemptions, allowing them to carry:

- **Economy Class**: Up to 8 kg

- **Premium Economy**: Up to 10 kg

- **First/Business Class**: Up to 12 kg

These exemptions apply strictly to tickets booked before May 2, 2024. Any changes to such bookings after this date will require compliance with the updated policy.

**IndiGo Airlines Hand Baggage Rules**

IndiGo Airlines allows passengers to carry one cabin bag with a maximum dimension of 115 cm and a weight limit of 7 kg. Additionally, travelers may carry a personal item, such as a handbag or small laptop bag, weighing up to 3 kg.

By staying informed about these updated regulations, passengers can avoid last-minute surprises and enjoy a smoother travel experience.
