Bad News for Booze Lovers: Alcohol Prices to Increase Soon, Says Government

Bhubaneswar (The Uttam Hindu): Odisha Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan has addressed reports about an increase in liquor prices in the state. He stated that the pricing committee has submitted its report and the government will make a decision after thorough consideration. The pricing committee which includes consultations with all stakeholders held a meeting three days ago and finalized its recommendations.
The minister highlighted that while the state government generates significant revenue from alcohol sales several factors influence this decision. Imposing taxes on alcohol boosts revenue but a complete liquor ban like in Bihar can lead to financial losses for the state. Moreover, alcohol bans may introduce challenges such as the risk of people consuming spurious liquor leading to fatalities. Thus, the government must carefully weigh multiple aspects to ensure the state benefits while addressing potential risks.
