Bangkok/New York (The Uttam Hindu): Moo Deng, a 5-month-old pygmy hippo and internet sensation, has received an extraordinary Christmas gift from cryptocurrency billionaire and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. The Canadian entrepreneur has donated over $290,000 (approximately ₹2.51 crore) to support Moo Deng’s care at Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo.

The generous contribution, equivalent to 10 million baht, was made through the zoo’s Wildlife Sponsorship Program, as reported by the New York Post, citing Viral Press.

A Heartwarming Gesture

In a letter to the zoo’s director, Buterin expressed his admiration for their conservation and education efforts. *“I very much look forward to seeing Moo Deng live long and prosper,”* he wrote. The billionaire was inspired to sponsor Moo Deng after visiting the zoo last month and learning about its plans to improve the Pygmy Hippopotamus habitat.

Buterin also accepted the zoo’s invitation to be Moo Deng’s "adoptive father," pledging his support while the young hippo grows up. *“I am delighted to donate to the zoo in her name and support your efforts to improve the facilities for both animals and visitors,”* he added.

Zoo’s Gratitude

The Khao Kheow Open Zoo, located in Thailand’s Chonburi province, expressed heartfelt thanks for the generous donation. In a statement on Facebook, zoo representatives wrote, *“We look forward to working with you over the next two years for the benefit of the Khao Kheow Open Zoo community and all our visitors!”*

Conservation Efforts Recognized

This sizable donation not only ensures Moo Deng’s care but also contributes to the zoo’s broader efforts in conservation and education. The funds are expected to bring significant upgrades to the Pygmy Hippopotamus habitat, enhancing the welfare of its residents and enriching the visitor experience.

Vitalik Buterin’s remarkable gesture highlights the intersection of philanthropy and wildlife conservation, offering hope for the preservation of endangered species like Moo Deng and inspiring global attention toward such initiatives.
