Avalanche in Mana Claims 4 Lives, Army Intensifies Rescue Efforts in Uttarakhand

Mana (The Uttam Hindu): The rescue operation continues in Mana, Uttarakhand, as the Army, ITBP, and BRO teams work tirelessly to save workers buried under a massive avalanche. So far, 50 workers have been rescued, but tragically, four have lost their lives. Five workers are still missing, and search efforts are ongoing.
Rescue Efforts Amid Challenging Conditions
On Friday, a devastating avalanche buried 55 workers associated with the Border Roads Organization (BRO) while they were engaged in road construction. 15 workers were rescued soon after the incident, but the operation faced severe obstacles due to bad weather on Saturday, preventing helicopter support.
As weather conditions improved today, helicopter rescue operations resumed, and three injured workers were airlifted to the military hospital in Joshimath.
Ongoing Search for Missing Workers
The Army confirmed that despite challenging conditions, they have successfully evacuated 50 out of the 55 trapped workers. However, five workers remain unaccounted for, and search operations are in full swing.
Officials on the Ground
District Magistrate Dr. Sandeep Tiwari confirmed that the three critically injured workers receiving treatment at Mana ITBP Hospital have been shifted to Joshimath Army Hospital. Their condition is currently stable.
Additional NDRF teams have arrived in Joshimath, with 28 personnel ready for relief efforts. Security and rescue teams, including SDRF, are stationed at Govind Ghat and Hanuman Chatti to provide further assistance.
Weather Advisory & Precautions
The Meteorological Department has issued precautionary warnings due to ongoing rain, snowfall, and avalanche risks. Authorities have advised people to suspend activities in high-risk zones and take shelter in safe locations away from potential landslides or snow collapses.
High-Level Military Visit Expected
Given the severity of the situation, Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta, GOC-in-C Central Command, along with GOC North India Area and DGBR, is expected to visit Mana today. If weather conditions remain favorable, Lt. Gen. Sengupta will brief the media on-site regarding the ongoing rescue operations.
Authorities have urged media representatives to arrive promptly near Mana to cover the updates on the rescue efforts.
Rescue Mission Continues
Efforts remain focused on locating the five missing workers, while authorities work round the clock to ensure maximum safety and relief. The Army, ITBP, BRO, NDRF, and SDRF teams continue to demonstrate unwavering dedication in this critical rescue mission.
