Amit Shah cuts short campaign in Manipur, heads back to Delhi amid rising tensions
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Union Home Minister Amit Shah canceled his rallies in poll-bound Maharashtra on Sunday and is returning to Delhi as the situation in Manipur remains volatile, sources confirmed. The Home Minister is expected to convene a meeting in Delhi to assess the situation in the northeastern state, according to sources.
On Saturday night, angry mobs set fire to the homes of three BJP legislators, including a senior minister, and a Congress MLA in different districts of Imphal Valley. This occurred as security forces thwarted an attempt by protestors to storm the ancestral residence of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. Shah had planned to attend several election rallies as part of the BJP's campaign in Maharashtra, but sources revealed he canceled the events and is now heading back to the national capital. While there has been no official statement on the reason for the cancellations, sources suggest it may be due to the escalating situation in Manipur.
The Home Minister is expected to meet with top officials in Delhi to review the developments. A team of central security officers is also likely to visit Manipur soon to assess the situation and provide assistance to the state government in managing the unrest.
