70+ and Living in Delhi? You're Getting Free Health Insurance

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Delhi government will launch 'Ayushman Cards' for all people above the age of 70 by the end of April. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta chaired a meeting on Wednesday along with other cabinet ministers, which was attended by legislators and officials from both the state and central governments. This initiative is part of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), which aims to provide health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for treatment in secondary and tertiary care hospitals.
The objective of the meeting was to discuss the implementation and distribution of Ayushman Cards, as well as the opening of Arogya Mandirs in the national capital. The Chief Minister said that after many years of waiting, Delhi has finally received the Ayushman Bharat scheme, and this meeting is being held to ensure that the cards are quickly created and distributed to the public. All legislators have been given the responsibility to help with this. Efforts are being made to provide the benefits to elderly citizens above 70 years of age.
The work of identifying locations to open 1,139 Arogya Mandirs in every area of Delhi should begin immediately, as previous governments wasted time and harmed Delhi. We don’t want to waste more time now. Our government will start work on this from today. All senior citizens aged 70 or above will be eligible for the Ayushman Card.
This card provides an annual health insurance cover of ₹5 lakh per family, covering over 1,500 medical procedures. The Delhi government is planning to open 1,139 Arogya Mandirs across the city. These Arogya Mandirs will provide healthcare services different from those offered by Mohalla Clinics. Legislators have been tasked with working alongside district magistrates to distribute existing Ayushman Cards and to help set up Arogya Mandirs.
Delhi CM Gupta said, “Legislators have been instructed to work with District Magistrates (DMs) to ensure swift distribution of Ayushman Cards and to establish Arogya Mandirs in all parts of the state.” Meanwhile, Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh said the government will build 1,139 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs for the people of Delhi.
He said, “Our goal is to build 1,139 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs for the people of Delhi, and we will achieve it. There was discussion on how to provide this facility to citizens above the age of 70 as soon as possible. Our Arogya Mandirs will be completely different from Mohalla Clinics. You will see the difference in their structure and way of functioning. The people of Delhi will appreciate it.” Under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, an agreement was signed between the Delhi Government and the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on April 5, 2025, in New Delhi.
