Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu):In a significant development, the Punjab government has decided to bring back seven associates of Amritpal Singh, the head of Waris Punjab De, from Dibrugarh jail in Assam to Punjab for prosecution. The associates are accused of attacking the Ajnala police station in 2023, in an attempt to free one of their associates from custody. The Punjab Police will begin the process of bringing them back from Monday. The National Security Act (NSA) will be removed from them, and they will face trial for their alleged role in the police station attack. The attack on the Ajnala police station occurred in February 2023, when a mob of around 200-250 people, led by Amritpal Singh, stormed the station to free one of their associates from custody.

According to sources, the Punjab government wants to prosecute all seven associates in connection with the Ajnala police station attack case. The government has refused to continue the NSA against them, paving the way for their prosecution. The Punjab government has not yet decided on the future course of action regarding Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in Dibrugarh jail under the NSA. Amritpal Singh, the MP from Khadoor Sahib in Punjab and head of Waris Punjab De, has been in jail since his arrest. The Lok Sabha has granted 54 days of leave of absence to jailed Punjab MP Amritpal Singh, the Centre informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court recently.
