Tragic deaths of Indian family at US-Canada border highlight dangers of illegal immigration
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a heartbreaking incident, an Indian family of four tragically froze to death while attempting to cross the US-Canada border in January 2022. The family, consisting of Jagdish Patel (39), his wife Vaishaliben (37), and their two children, Vihangi (11) and Dharmik (3), were discovered near Emerson, Manitoba, just meters from the border. The family succumbed to the extreme cold, as temperatures plummeted to around -35°C (-31°F) at the time of their deaths.
The Patels had traveled from their village in Gujarat, India, to Canada, arriving in Toronto on January 12, 2022. After reaching Toronto, they made their way toward the US border, likely becoming part of a human smuggling operation. On January 19, they attempted to cross the border but were separated from their group during a severe blizzard. Unfortunately, they were found dead after enduring hours of exposure to the harsh winter conditions without the proper clothing or preparation for such extreme weather.
This tragic event has shed light on the growing issue of human trafficking and illegal immigration, particularly among Indian nationals seeking better opportunities abroad. Following the incident, authorities arrested individuals connected to the smuggling operation, emphasizing the perilous risks faced by those attempting similar dangerous crossings.
