Tragic Boat Explosion Leaves 143 Dead, Dozens Missing
Congo(The Uttam Hindu): At least 143 people have died in a horrific boat accident in the South African country of Congo, while dozens are still missing. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday near the confluence of the Ruki and Congo Rivers, close to the capital Mbandaka—where the Congo River is considered the deepest in the world.
Explosion occurred while cooking in a boat, 143 people died; several dozen went missing: It is reported that the boat was carrying more passengers than allowed. During the journey, a woman on board was cooking when the fire came into contact with highly flammable fuel stored nearby, causing a powerful explosion. The boat caught fire and, amid the chaos, capsized shortly after. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing. According to Josephine Lokumu, the head of the investigation team, 145 bodies have been recovered so far. Many of the bodies are badly burned, making identification difficult.
With the help of local civil organizations and authorities, the bodies are being cremated. Civil leader Joseph Lokondo stated that many people were burned to death in the explosion, while others drowned. Search operations for the missing and rescue efforts are underway at a war footing. This incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of water transportation in Congo.
