Iran (The Uttam Hindu) :  In a shocking display of repression, Iranian singer Mehdi Yarrahi has been sentenced to 74 lashes for writing a song that criticized the country's mandatory hijab laws. The punishment has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from human rights groups and music fans around the world. Yarrahi, a popular singer and songwriter in Iran, was arrested in November 2022 after releasing a song that questioned the country's strict hijab laws. The song, titled "Empty Heads," criticized the government's enforcement of the hijab and called for greater freedom and autonomy for women.

HARSH PUNISHMENT SPARKS OUTRAGE

Yarrahi's sentence, which includes two years and eight months in prison, in addition to the 74 lashes, has been widely condemned as excessive and unjust. Human rights groups have denounced the punishment as a clear attempt to silence dissent and stifle free speech. "This is a blatant example of the Iranian government's efforts to suppress dissent and maintain its grip on power," said a spokesperson for Amnesty International. "Mehdi Yarrahi's punishment is a clear violation of his human rights and an affront to freedom of expression."

NOBEL LAUREATE JOINS CHORUS OF CONDEMNATION

Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian human rights activist, has also spoken out against Yarrahi's punishment. Ebadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 for her advocacy work, called the sentence "a clear example of the Iranian government's disregard for human rights." "This punishment is not only unjust, but it is also a clear attempt to intimidate and silence others who may dare to speak out against the government," Ebadi said.

GLOBAL BACKLASH AGAINST IRANIAN GOVERNMENT

Yarrahi's punishment has sparked a global backlash against the Iranian government, with music fans and human rights activists around the world condemning the sentence. A petition calling for Yarrahi's release has garnered thousands of signatures, and social media platforms are filled with messages of support for the singer.
