Jerusalem (The Uttam Hindu): Israel and Hamas have reached an agreement for a ceasefire, set to begin on Sunday bringing a significant halt to the devastating 15-month conflict in Gaza. This agreement, announced by Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani includes a plan for an exchange of hostages and prisoners, sparking hopes for a long-term resolution to the violence that has resulted in over 46,000 deaths.

After weeks of intense negotiations the deal is designed to secure the release of dozens of hostages held by Hamas and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody. Additionally, it is expected to allow displaced civilians in Gaza to return to their homes and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the region. However, reports indicate that Israeli airstrikes resumed shortly after the ceasefire announcement, leading to more casualties in Gaza. The Israeli military has yet to comment on these strikes while Hamas has refrained from launching any attacks on Israel since the ceasefire deal was declared.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has acknowledged that the ceasefire deal is still in the process of being finalized and emphasized that its success depends on both parties upholding the terms in good faith. Mediators from Egypt, Qatar and the U.S. are set to convene in Cairo to discuss how the agreement will be implemented. The international community is closely monitoring these developments with global leaders urging both sides to adhere to the ceasefire conditions and prioritize civilian safety as they navigate this critical moment in the ongoing conflict.
