Jakarta (The Uttam Hindu) : A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern North Maluku province of Indonesia on Monday, as reported by the country's meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency. Initially recorded at a magnitude of 5.6, the agency later revised it to 5.8. The earthquake occurred at 10:24 a.m. Jakarta time, with its epicenter located 7 km north of South Halmahera Regency, at a depth of 11 km beneath the seabed.
Tremors from the quake were felt with intensity levels of III to IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in Labuha town and on Obi Island. Fortunately, no tsunami warning was issued, as the tremors were not strong enough to generate large waves. Fehby Alting, head of the provincial disaster management agency, confirmed that the tremors did not result in any damage or casualties.
Indonesia, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is known for its seismic activity and is home to over 120 active volcanoes. The region frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its geological positioning, making it one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the world.
