16 year old girl disposes of foetus near drain after Instagram relationship leads to pregnancy

Surat (The Uttam Hindu): A 16-year-old girl in Gujarat's Surat district became pregnant after being in a relationship with a 17-year-old boy she met on Instagram. The pregnancy was later terminated and the four-month-old foetus was discarded near a city drain. The incident came to light when locals discovered the foetus and alerted the police. The foetus was sent to the New Civil Hospital where it was declared dead.

According to Surat's Deputy Commissioner of Police Vijay Singh Gurjar the boy lived in a rented house in Pandesara, Surat and was in a relationship with the girl, leading to her pregnancy. When questioned, the girl initially stated that the boy had provided her with five tablets to terminate the pregnancy after learning about it. She claimed to have taken two tablets, resulting in a miscarriage at home. She admitted to disposing of the foetus near the drain. However, during further questioning in the presence of a lady doctor and a representative from a local NGO the girl revised her statement, alleging that the boy's sister-in-law had given her the tablets and assisted her and her mother in terminating the pregnancy.

The police have detained the boy and collected DNA samples from both him and the girl to aid in the investigation. The boy is expected to be presented before the Juvenile Justice Board. Meanwhile, authorities are continuing their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the case.
