Gandhinagar (The Uttam Hindu): In a bizarre turn of events, a man from Gujarat deliberately severed his own fingers to escape working as a computer operator at his family’s diamond firm. The man, identified as Mayur Tarapara, amputated four fingers from his left hand with a sharp knife in an attempt to be deemed unfit for the role at his family's business, Anabh Gems, located in Surat’s Varachha Mini Bazaar, as reported by ANI on Saturday, citing Gujarat police. Earlier, Tarapara had told police a story about searching for his missing fingers after allegedly fainting on the side of the road. However, further investigation revealed that he had inflicted the injury on himself.

The 32-year-old claimed he lacked the courage to inform his family that he did not want to work at the firm. According to Surat Crime Branch’s statement, the absence of fingers would have made him unfit to continue working as a computer operator in the accounts department. However, Tarapara initially told a different story to the police. He said he was on his way to a friend's house when he lost consciousness and fell near Amroli's ring road on December 8. Upon regaining consciousness, he reportedly found that four of his fingers had been severed. The police initially suspected the fingers were removed for black magic purposes.

The case was filed at Amroli police station, and the investigation was later handed over to the city’s crime branch. Using CCTV footage and technical surveillance, the crime branch uncovered Tarapara's involvement in the incident. When confronted, Tarapara confessed to the act. He admitted to buying a sharp knife from Char Rasta in Singanpore, then heading to Amroli Ring Road four days later. Around 10 pm, he chopped off his four fingers and tied a rope around his elbow to prevent excessive bleeding. He disposed of the fingers and the knife in separate bags. Three of the severed fingers were later found in one of the bags, and the knife was recovered from another. Tarapara’s friends took him to the hospital, and the investigation is still ongoing.
