West Bengal Faces Unrest Again: ISF Supporters Heading To Kolkata Against Waqf Law Stopped, Vehicles Set On Fire
Kolkata (The Uttam Hindu): The situation turned tense in Bhangar area of South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Monday when violent clashes broke out between police and Indian Secular Front (ISF) supporters. The incident took place when the police stopped the vehicles of ISF workers who were going to join a protest in Kolkata against the Waqf Amendment Act.
According to the information, ISF supporters were travelling in buses and other vehicles towards Kolkata's Ramlila Maidan to protest against the Waqf Amendment Act. The police stopped them from proceeding on the Basanti Expressway near Bhangar. Angry at being stopped, the ISF workers allegedly blocked the expressway, after which a heated argument and then a violent clash broke out with the police.
The videos and pictures that have emerged show the situation after the clashes to be horrific. The protesters reportedly damaged a police vehicle and set several two-wheelers on fire. The police had to use force to control the situation and disperse the violent mob.
This entire controversy is about the Waqf Amendment Act, which many organizations including the ISF are opposing. Recently, there was a lot of violence against this law in districts like Malda and Murshidabad in West Bengal. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the main opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state are blaming each other for these violent incidents.
It is worth noting that the Indian Secular Front (ISF) is the only party represented in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly apart from the Trinamool Congress and the BJP. At present, police force is deployed in the Bhangar area and the situation is being monitored.
