Supreme Court Calls for Consideration of Law to Protect Domestic Workers' Rights
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Supreme Court has recommended the creation of a law to protect and regulate the rights of domestic workers, urging the central government to propose legal measures for their regulation and safety. The court has also directed the formation of a committee to look into the issue with a mandate to submit a report within six months.
A bench comprising Justice Suryakant and Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan issued these directions while hearing a petition related to domestic workers. The bench has instructed the Ministry of Labour and Employment, along with other relevant ministries to take necessary actions. After receiving the committee's report, the central government should work towards enacting a law to safeguard the dignity and security of domestic workers.
The bench observed that although domestic workers form an essential workforce, there is no nationwide law in place to protect their rights. As a result, they remain vulnerable to exploitation by employers and agencies. These remarks were made while disposing of a criminal appeal.
