Padma Shri for Sally Holkar, Maruti Bhujangrao, and L. Hangthing: India's Unsung Heroes Recognized
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): the eve of Republic Day, the central government today announced the list of individuals who will be honored with the Padma Awards for 2025. The list features several unsung heroes and unique awardees, including Kuwait-based yoga trainer and apple magnate Hariman. Goa’s freedom fighter Libya Lobo Sardesai, Madhya Pradesh entrepreneur Shaily Holkar, Marathi writer Maruti Bhujangrao, Delhi-based gynecologist Dr. Neerja Bhatla, social worker Bhim Singh Bhavesh, South Indian musician P. Datchanmoorthy, and Nagaland fruit farmer L. Hangthing will also receive the Padma Shri.
Sally Holkar, an 82-year-old vocal advocate for women’s empowerment, is credited with reviving the nearly lost Maheshwari craft. She also established a handloom school in Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh, to train artisans in traditional weaving techniques.
In addition, the President announced that 93 gallantry awards will be conferred upon members of the armed forces, including two Kirti Chakras and 14 Shaurya Chakras. Three of these awards will be posthumous.
The Ministry of Defense further stated that among the 93 gallantry awards, one will receive the Sena Medal (Gallantry), 66 will be honored with the Sena Medal (including seven posthumous awards), two Navy Medals (Gallantry), and eight Air Force Medals (Gallantry). Additionally, the President has approved 305 defense decorations for the armed forces and other personnel, including 30 Param Vishisht Seva Medals, five Uttam Yudh Seva Medals, 57 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals, 10 Yudh Seva Medals, one Sena Medal (for Duty), 43 Sena Medals (for Duty), eight Navy Medals (for Duty), 15 Air Force Medals (for Duty), four Vishisht Seva Medals, and 132 Vishisht Seva Medals.
