Kolkata (The Uttam Hindu): In a landmark verdict in the sensational Kolkata doctor rape-murder case the court has sentenced the main accused, Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment. The case involved a tragic incident at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where a trainee doctor was raped and murdered. Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das while delivering the judgment, stated that the case did not qualify as a 'rarest of rare' case and therefore, instead of the death penalty, Roy was given a life sentence.

The court also imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on the convict. The court further directed the state government to compensate the victim's family with ₹17 lakh. However, the victim's parents expressed that they did not require any compensation. Sanjay Roy was convicted under sections 64, 66 and 103(1) of the BNS Act which carry the maximum penalty of either the death sentence or life imprisonment.

Before pronouncing the judgment, the judge informed Roy that all the charges of rape and murder against him had been conclusively proven. In his defense, Roy claimed that he had been falsely implicated. He insisted that he always wore a Rudraksha mala and if he had committed the crime, the mala would have broken at the scene. Roy also alleged that he was not allowed to speak during the investigation and was forced to sign documents.
