Dr. Manmohan Singh Passes Away: Body to Arrive at Congress HQ Tomorrow, 7-Day State Mourning declared
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India and one of the nation’s most respected economists, passed away on Thursday night at AIIMS Delhi. Singh, aged 92, had been battling health issues for a while and was admitted after a sudden loss of consciousness. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at 9:51 PM. The Union government has announced a seven-day national mourning to honor the contributions of the "architect of India's economic reforms." During this period, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast, and there will be no official entertainment. Singh’s last rites, to be performed with full state honors, are scheduled for Saturday in New Delhi.
Dr. Manmohan Singh's mortal remains will be brought to the Congress Headquarters at 24, Akbar Road, New Delhi, on December 28, 2024, for the public to pay their final respects. His last rites will be performed near Rajghat with full state honors.
In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Dr. Singh, who passed away on December 26 at AIIMS, New Delhi. The statement read:
“The Government of India is deeply saddened by the passing away of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. In honor of the departed leader, the government declares seven days of state mourning. During this period, the National Flag will fly at half-mast throughout India and in Indian missions abroad, and no official entertainment will be organized.”
Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92, passed away at 9:51 PM at AIIMS after being admitted to the emergency department at 8:06 PM. He was undergoing treatment for age-related health issues and had collapsed at home earlier in the evening.
A distinguished economist and statesman, Dr. Singh served as India’s Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014. His contributions to the nation’s economic reforms and political stability are widely recognized, and he remains one of India’s most respected leaders.
