A 30-year study revealed that individuals who consumed more plant protein than animal protein had a 19% lower risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and a 27% reduced risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). The greatest cardiovascular benefits were observed when replacing red and processed meats with plant protein sources like lentils, soy, or nuts. However, incorporating fish and lean animal proteins, such as chicken, also provides heart-healthy advantages.

Plant proteins offer several benefits for heart health: Rich in fiber: Helps reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) levels. Low in saturated fats: Reduces the risk of plaque buildup in the arteries. Packed with antioxidants: Combats inflammation, which is a major factor in heart disease. On the other hand, some animal proteins, especially red and processed meats, are high in saturated fats and cholesterol, which can increase the risk of heart disease when consumed in excess. The verdict: Which protein should we choose? For optimal heart health, include foods like lentils, quinoa, chickpeas, and nuts in your diet. Replace red and processed meats with plant-based alternatives or lean animal proteins. A balance of plant and lean animal proteins can promote overall health, but plant-based sources should form the bulk of your diet.
