Jaffer Surprised by Jaiswal's Decision to Leave Mumbai for Goa at an Early Stage, Says IPL 2025
New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer expressed his surprise over Yashasvi Jaiswal’s decision to leave Mumbai and join Goa in domestic cricket at such an early stage of his career. On Saturday, Jaiswal made a strong comeback with a 45-ball 67, helping Rajasthan Royals secure a 50-run victory over Punjab Kings in Mullanpur. Jaffer, speaking on ESPNCricinfo, said, “I was surprised that Jaiswal made such a quick decision to leave Mumbai, especially at his age (23). If someone is 34 or 35, they might look for new opportunities, but for Jaiswal to move at this stage is unexpected. His decision likely stems from some issues with the Mumbai team management, but leaving a team he’s been with since his Under-14 days is a big step. Goa is a team that just entered the elite group, and for someone with his potential, I find it surprising that he chose to play there.”
He further stated, "Jaiswal should focus on playing for India across all three formats, not on domestic cricket like the Ranji Trophy. He should aim for bigger goals." Although Jaiswal’s fifty against PBKS came off 40 balls, it marked his slowest half-century in the IPL, with 12 dot balls indicating that he is still trying to find his rhythm. Jaffer pointed out that while Jaiswal hit five sixes and three fours, he also faced a lot of dot balls, suggesting that he might still be struggling to hit top form. Mark Boucher, former South African batter and former Mumbai Indians coach, also shared his views, agreeing with Jaffer’s analysis of Jaiswal’s knock. “He needed just a few more overs at the crease to convert his start into a match-winning knock. Had he stayed longer, we could have seen the kind of innings he’s known for. I’m sure he’ll be disappointed with his timing of the dismissal,” Boucher said.
