Punjab Government Enforces Strict Guidelines for Schools, Bans Junk Food and Sets Safety Standards – Read to Know the Key Changes

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): The Punjab government has introduced strict guidelines for playway schools in the state. Dr. Baljit Kaur shared this information in a press conference in Chandigarh, highlighting several new policies aimed at improving school standards. One key rule is the ban on junk food like Maggi and pasta in school lunches, including both packed lunches from home and food sold within or near school premises. These new rules aim to ensure healthier eating habits for children.

The guidelines also include regulations for the physical infrastructure and management of the schools. A single teacher will not be allowed to teach more than 20 children, ensuring better attention for each child. Play areas must be safe, with separate toilets for boys and girls, and classrooms should be well-ventilated. Schools are required to install CCTV cameras for security, and there must be a rest room and a library within the premises. Health checkups for children will be conducted monthly, with records maintained for safety.

Other regulations include a ban on corporal punishment, such as slapping, and measures to ensure fire safety in schools. Importantly, there will be no screening tests or parent interviews during the admission process, and a Parent-Teacher Association will be set up in each school. Dr. Kaur also emphasized that parents should verify whether the school is registered before enrolling their children. Information about the registration status of schools will be available on the Social Welfare Department's website. Additionally, the Punjab government has announced holidays for all public and private schools in the state from December 24 to December 31, 2024.
