Nihangs attack police in Punjab: SHO slashed on face, SI’s fingers severed in violent raid

Ludhiana (The Uttam Hindu): In a violent incident in Ludhiana, Punjab a police team was assaulted during a raid in Kamalpur village on the night of January 18, 2025. The raid aimed to apprehend suspects linked to a recent armed car theft. The robbery involved three individuals, reportedly disguised as Nihangs a traditional Sikh warrior group who robbed a man at gunpoint in Sangowal village.

During the raid, four police personnel including Station House Officer (SHO) Harshveer Singh and Marado police post in-charge Tarsem Barar, sustained injuries. Reports suggest that the assailants were heavily armed and aggressive, resulting in a chaotic confrontation. Eyewitnesses also claimed gunfire erupted during the incident though this has not been officially confirmed by the authorities.

The SHO suffered a sharp weapon injury near his eye while other officers sustained injuries during the altercation. Despite the violence, police managed to apprehend one of the attackers at the scene. The injured officers were swiftly taken to a civil hospital for medical attention. In response to the attack, local authorities have intensified efforts to locate and arrest the remaining culprits. This incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in Punjab and raises concerns over security and community tensions in the region.
